Ella Henderson is the UK's version of Australia's Ricki Lee or the US's Jennifer Hudson. She was favourite to win the X-Factor in 2012. She was a singer and songwriter with an amazing voice but bewilderingly came sixth, confounding a nation. That year homophobe James Arthur came first, bad decision England.
After coming sixth, Ella still signed with Simon Cowell's record company and was given time to write and record her debut album - almost unheard of for a reality singing show contestant. Almost two years later she emerged with a killer debut track, "Ghost", which went to number one in the UK and to number three here in Australia. The gamble had paid off for both Henderson and Cowell.
Now we come to single number three, a killer ballad that I am loving this week. The track, co-written by Henderson, is a showcase of her soulful and heartfelt vocals. Some people may be massive detractors of singing shows, but Henderson proves that true talent can be found in these shows. This great track also continues the massive trend of ballads once again becoming popular. It's been a big year for ballads, with "Say Something", "You Ruin Me", "All of Me", "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" and pretty much anything by Sam Smith, hitting the top of the charts.
The song is about a woman realising she is no longer afraid to love and giving herself completely to her man. Yeah, there's nothing new here, but it's done very well. It will be on heavy rotation for me for a few weeks! Check it out pop music fans.
Three songs in I don't think I'll ask the usual, "What's your favourite" question. Instead I'll just share "Ghost", Ella Henderson's debut track, which I know without doubt will end up in my Top 20 tracks of the year. Looking forward to compiling that list very soon! Also, what a great clip this is!
