Live Review: Selena Gomez @ Qudos Bank Arena - 9.8.16

Selena Gomez finally made it to Australia this week for a concert series, and let's just say, it was truly worth the wait - what a cracking evening of pure pop entertainment!

I guess the promoters didn't think Selena was as popular as she clearly is, cause she sold out two shows at the Hordern Pavilion in record time. The show was quickly moved to the MUCH bigger Qudos Bank Arena (I think that's its title this week). I'd love to say the transition was seamless, but let's face it, it wasn't. But after the longest line I have ever seen, we finally got inside and wow those teen girls were ferocious - that's the roughest mosh pit I've been in for a while. Pushing, shoving and girls being pulled over the front barricade, crying. It was a shame that a small percentage of people made it so uncomfortable for everyone else.

But enough about that, this night was about music - and what great music we witnessed. Joe Jonas led, DNCE, were up first. Rarely is the support act exceptional, but this was one of the cases. The four piece were on fire with a party like set. Special mention must be made for band members, JinJoo Lee and Cole Whittle, whose energy was electric. Joe sounded great and eased through the tunes. There were some great covers, TLC's "No Scrubs" and Prince's "Kiss", which was sublime. They used the video screens perfectly and the crowd danced, screamed and sang along. Their two hits were magical. New single, "Toothbrush" was a fun number and "Cake By the Ocean" went off! They prepared the audience for Selena, and we were ready for a massive night.

I don't think photos and videos do Selena justice, because I was blown away by just how beautiful Selena is in person - and I am a gay, gay man! All night Selena's outfits and styling was flawless. The production, while simple, was exemplary. Massive video screens displayed inspiring vignettes and the lighting was great. Then there was the talented band and backing dancers, and can I just add that some of those talented dancers were damn sexy!

The show was everything a Selena fan could ask for, fast paced and fun. Selena mostly concentrated on her brilliant latest album, "Revival", with just the biggest hits from the previous albums explored. We got to hear the really early stuff, "Who Says" and "Love you like a love song". The crowd went crazy for "Come and Get It". The highlight of the whole show for me had to be, "Slow Down". Wow it was epic and early enough in the evening to really set the scene. The only other older song I would have loved to have heard live was, "The Heart Wants What It Wants", even though it was featured in one of the videos.

The stuff from the latest album was great, and was wonderful to see her start and finish the night with "Revival", my favourite song on the album. "Sober" was great, as was "Me and My Girls"; and the singles were really handled well. Had to love, "Same Old Love" and "Good For You"; the crowd loved singing along with "Hands To Myself", and the choreography in "Kill 'Em With Kindness" was camp and fun. By the time her collaboration with Zedd, "I Want You To Know" came on, the crowd was primed and went crazy - it was a great number!

We were also treated to a new song from Selena's next album, and the other highlight of the evening was a brilliant cover of Eurythmics, "Sweet Dreams" - this cover was everything. With a hard edge and great vocals, I was in pop heaven.

And how nice was she? Her banter with the crowd was great and her vocals were strong. This was a truly great evening of entertainment. Come back anytime Selena!
