Oh hey there second week of February, it's nice to see you've continued the 2017 tradition of releasing some truly brilliant pop music. And look who you've brought with you! The return of Texas and Mandy Moore, some new Gaga and Carly Rae Jepsen and what's that, you have new Katy Perry? Oh, second week of February, you spoil us.
Take a look at our regular new singles blog, and tell us in the comments which of these songs you love yourself.
Love Exists - Amy Lee
Amy Lee, the former lead woman of Evanescence is back. While her previous work seemed to combine metal and opera, this has a little more pop sensibility. Naturally, her truly spectacular voice is front and centre, with a great pop beat and some lovely orchestration. In fact this song sounds a little more like Delta Goodrem than Evanescence. But it is a stunning return, the song builds beautifully and the passion is intense. A welcome return.
Ciao Adios - Anne Marie
Anne Marie has had a great past year. "Do It Right" and "Alarm" were huge hits here in Australia, and then her collaboration with Clean Bandit, "Rockabye" seemed to be number one for ages. So it was the right time for a new song, and what a solid tune. Sounding a little like, "Rockabye", this tune may just be Anne Marie's strongest yet - that chorus is all kinds of infectious. It's cleverly written and Anne Marie's voice goes from playful to powerful. We need an Anne Marie album, pronto!
I Love You (feat. Kid Ink) - Axwell and Ingrosso
Swedish House Mafia were massive, so it makes sense that when two of the gents form a dance duo, they would be amazing. They've released some great songs over the past few years, but this may just be their best. It's euro house with a great beat and a pop sensibility. It's the kind of chorus that gets you singing along, even after only a few listens. The beat makes you want to dance, a very solid tune indeed.
Temperamental Love - Bridgit Mendler & Devontee
Bridgit Mendler is the kind of artist who is just on the outskirts of having a massive breakthrough hit. While she has gone Top Ten in the UK, Australia and the US have remained elusive. Well this Fergie sounding track, may just be the song. The beat is hard and slow and the chorus is catchy as hell. It's a playful little song that gets your foot tapping. She deserves a hit, so let's hope this is the one as it certainly is a tune I can see people loving.
Heart Starts Beating - Coasts
London indie-pop outfit Coasts are back with a bit more of a dance beat on their catchy new tune, "Heart Starts Beating". This is a great little track with some really great instrumentation and a really solid chorus. The production is first class and the track takes on an interesting journey, 4 minutes of pure fun. Fans are excited to see their return, and while I don't know Coasts very well, I am certainly keen to check them out more.
Chained to the Rhythm (feat. Skip Marley) - Katy Perry
Last year Katy Perry released the brilliant, "Rise", it went to number one here in Australia and reminded us how much we missed new music from her. Well now she is back with a brilliant new song, definitely the best new release of the week. This is pop perfection, a slow groove that makes you want to dance. Katy sounds at her best and the lyrics are fun, "Turn it up, it's your favourite song, dance, dance, dance to the distortion". Love that visualisation. This song is going to be massive, definitely going to be one of the biggest hits of the year. Now let me press repeat again.
John Wayne - Lady Gaga
This week sees a new release from another massive diva. On the back of her great Superbowl performance, Lady Gaga releases one of the more interesting cuts from her "Joanne" album. This one mashes the country, pop and dance vibes together well. The song is kooky and the production is fantastic. Gaga's voice sounds strong and playful; and that chorus is a great one. Her sales have improved since the Superbowl, maybe this track may get the attention it deserves.
Wind In My Hair - Mandy Moore
We haven't had new music from Mandy Moore for a while, so that is reason to celebrate. This week's release, "Wind In My Hair" is clearly the movie cut - so it's missing the pop bells and whistles. But how great to hear Mandy's distinctive voice again, and not just in pieces on the great, "This Is Us". Never been a big Disney movie fan, but am a massive fan of Mandy Moore, so this one will get some plays from me.
It Takes Two - Lil Yachty & Carly Rae Jepsen
Rejoice, for there is a new Carly Rae Jepsen tune. The world overlooked her brilliant "E-Mo-Tion" album and its subsequent B Side album, it was some of the best music of the past few years. So it's great to see her return with an explosive cover of a classic. This is a playful song with a great beat and some old school rap that owes more than a little to the early 90s hip hop sound. This is the kind of song that is pure escapism, and that is a good thing.
Don't Kill My Vibe - Sigrid
It's always good discovering a new artist, and Sigrid is one to keep an eye on. Her debut international release, "Don't Kill My Vibe", has pop anthem written all over it. The 20 year old from Scandinavia is clearly talented and has penned this thumping and infectious track. I have been grooving to this one for days and love to turn it loud. Her voice is quite special and she pushes it to its very limits, letting the guts and gravel shine - it makes for a passionate tune that is exceptional.
Let's Work It Out - Texas
Yay! Texas are back! Texas were a favourite in the 80s and 90s with some brilliant tunes, "I Don't Want a Lover", "Say What You Want" and "Summer Son", to name a few. But get ready for their ninth album, and if this track is any indication, it's going to be a fantastic one. The track feels like a throwback to the 70s, almost acoustic disco - sounding a little like lead singer Sharleen Spiteri's brilliant "Xanadu" cover. It's an easy track to enjoy and Sharleen's vocals are again stunning. Another return of a great artist, love this year so far!
