Live Review: Drake - Feb 27, 2015, Rod Laver Arena
"Tonight I'm not looking to change your life, I'm just trying to be a part of it," and so began the first live performance from megastar Drake in Melbourne. Drake is a likable guy, his charisma is evident from the beginning. And even better, he is a consummate performer who sounds incredible live.
What an eclectic bunch of people filling Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne last night. They all shared one thing in common, they were loving the show and Drake loved hearing them scream. Artists have long loved telling their audience they are the best ever, and Drake made an art form of buttering up the crowd, telling everyone this was one of the best nights of his life. He may have gotten a little carried away but the audience ate it up and it made him performer harder. It was the circle of life / love / Drake.
There was a lot to like last night, Drake performed a plethora of his hits, often quick medleys of his hits and best known songs. Highlights included his Rihanna duet, "Take Care", which made the audience go crazy, his verse from ILoveMakonnen's hit "Tuesday" (also an audience favourite) and "Crew Love". You also couldn't deny the energy and great performance of hits, "Started From The Bottom", "Headlines" and "HYFR".
There was a great moment when Drake climbed into a large swing and was moved onto a smaller stage at the edge of the dancefloor. It was here Drake performed my favourite song of his, "Marvin's Room" and the crowd favourite, "Hold On, We're Going Home". The song may have gone a little too long, but it was clear Drake was having a great time.
Sure, the gig had a distinct lack of irony but it was certainly an enjoyable evening and I walked away a bigger fan - always a good sign after watching an artist perform.
Did you see Drake last night, what did you think? Tell us in the comments section below.
