Single of the Week: What Do You Mean? - Justin Bieber

Bieber is back, in a big way. Currently number one in Australia and the UK, "What Do You Mean?" looks set to be Bieber's biggest hit ever - and rightly so. The stunning "What Do You Mean?" is a great direction for Bieber and I'm very excited to make it this week's Single of the Week.

Justin Bieber is a fascinating artist, over his relatively short career he has explored the very wide distance between pop genres, some with more success than others. His first album was teen bubble gum pop, it wasn't always my taste. Then his second album saw his pop music grow up, he incorporated some dubstep and the results were great. Songs like "As Long As You Love Me" and "Beauty and a Beat" were fun, catchy and genuinely good songs. In his slightly bizarre "Journals" project, Bieber went a bit more hip-hop and the result was forced and uninspired. So it was great when he teamed up with Skrillex and Diplo to make "Where Are U Now?", now that was an inspired choice. A new sound for Bieber and helped him find a new audience.

So now we come to the new single, and I am going to boldly call it the best song Bieber has ever made. The new direction is brilliant, a little pop, a little EDM, all fantastic. He is no longer a teen making music, this is an adult releasing damn good pop.

The instrumentation on the song is stunning, I love the beginning where it sounds like a clock ticking, or maybe it's a heart beating? Then it delves into some fine damn music. The highlight here though is Bieber's developing voice - it is sounding stronger than ever here. His sweet tone is still there, but his range is increasing and he sounds wonderful.

Lyrically it's fun, despite what that idiot Lena Dunham said (this is NOT about consent), it's all about a guy who can't quite work out his girlfriend's mixed messages, "When you nod your head yes but you wanna say no". It's a fun song and the clip is fun as well.

Justin Bieber has clearly done some soul searching these past couple of years and smartly he's putting the music first, and the music is awesome. Very excited for the album now!
