Top 5 Songs: Spice Girls

"Colours of the world, spice up your life!" Yes indeed! The Spice Girls, you got to love them. (And if you don't, there is seriously something wrong with you) They may have only had three proper albums and a greatest hits package, but they shone bright there for a small time! It felt the right time to select them for this week's always popular Top 5 list.

It was the catch cry of the time, "Who's your favourite Spice Girl?" And while it may have changed sometimes, I guess my favourite was, and still is, Geri (Ginger). I have no idea what that says about me! I loved them in the 90s, I even got to go the premiere of their film and watched them walk the red carpet. I may have also once dressed as Baby at a dress up party!

The girls have always had a knack of releasing very infectious pop music, the kind of tracks that get stuck right down in your internal jukebox. There were so many great songs I could have chosen to put on this list, they haven't released a bad song (I'm choosing to ignore "Headlines"), and there are a few albums tracks I adore as well, like "Tell Me Why" and "Never Give Up On the Good Times". As for singles that just missed out, great tracks like "Mama", "2 Become 1", "Too Much" and "Holler". As I said, I could name any of their singles here.

So here's my list of the Top 5 Spice Girls songs, and remember to tell us your favourite Spice Girls songs in the comments section below.

5 - Who Do You Think You Are

Like so many of their tunes, this is such a fun track. I love that each of the girls get a chance to shine here, but it is really Mel C who shines brightest here. The disco inspired beat is fantastic and that chorus is just so very catchy. Plus there's a very fun video. Matched as a double A side with "Mama", this was a major winner and a track I still love to listen to this all the time ... and dance along stupidly!

4 - Spice Up Your Life

When this song was being released there was so hype and excitement about the track, and it was warranted. This break neck speed tune is so much fun, you can't help but sing along. Sure, some of the lyrics may be ridiculous, but that doesn't matter when the delivery is so damn good. The music sounded great, such an amazing beat, plus the girls were spot on with their branding. A brilliant track.

3 - Goodbye

The lead single from their third album, the Geri-less "Forever", is a truly stunning ballad. By this stage the girl's voices were developing beautifully and they sounded great here, especially both Mel B and C. The dramatic strings sound great and while the chorus is brilliant, it's the catchy bridge I love the most. Lyrically powerful, this is a truly beautiful tune.

2 - Wannabe

Iconic may be an understatement. Our intro to the Spice Girls and to girl power, this was a perfect debut. This song is the stuff of legend, we all know the lyrics. The line, "You got to get with my friends", still makes me smile. If this track belongs to any of the girls, it's Mel B, whose fierceness is evident here. Plus it's a great clip, introducing us to their alter egos! Still love it all these years later.

1 - Viva Forever

I have such incredible love for this lush and beautiful ballad. Released after Geri had left the group, the film clip featured all five ladies as fairies. Ironically, Geri is credited as being the main songwriter on this track. The strings are beautiful and the flamenco guitar is haunting. Vocally the ladies are spot on and the harmonises are simply perfect. This track was another chance for Mel C to dominate with her effortless vocals. This is a special one!
