Album Review: Detour - Cyndi Lauper

You can't keep a good woman down, a statement which may well have just been written about Cyndi Lauper. The music icon is back with a new album, a collection of country covers, and is fantastic.

I'll say it again, Cyndi Lauper is an icon. I read her autobiography a few years ago, and fell in love with this legend even more. Over the years her music has been exceptional, from pop dominance to blues and classic covers, Cyndi has always been captivating. And she has a knack for covering a song with unique interpretations and her trademark quirky voice, I am still enamoured with her cover of the classic, "Walk On By".

So now it is country music's turn to feel the love of Ms Lauper and the results are brilliant. You can't help but have a smile when you hear these great covers. Groundbreaking? Of course not. Captivating? You betcha.

These are great covers, Cyndi has stamped her originality on all of them and this album is a real pleasure to listen to. There are several highlights. "Misty Blue" is the perfect cover and suits her voice perfectly. Lauper has a sweet soul to her voice that is timeless and makes this song stunning. "I Fall To Pieces" is probably the most iconic out of these songs and it is handled beautifully. I love Cyndi's version and will be playing it a lot.

The other major highlights come from her duets. "Detour" with Emmylou Harris is the perfect duet with their voices melding together perfectly, "Nightlife" with Willie Nelson is brilliant and "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" with Vince Gill is the most fun track on the album. Cyndi's speaking voice make me smile, so it's great to hear it here. The duet with Jewel, "I Want To Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" is also great.

My favourite song on the whole album is the duet with Alison Krauss, "Hard Candy Christmas". This Dolly Parton track has pure heart and the vulnerability in Lauper's voice is put to perfect use. Not entirely a Christmas song, it will certainly be added to my list of favourite Christmas tunes. This is a truly beautiful piece.

What a fun little album, a great excursion into country music from one of the best artists of our generation.
