Singles: The Best of April 2016

May, already. Seriously, who is making the year fly by? And what a great month April was, especially for new music. So join us for our monthly look at our favourite 6 singles of the past month. And remember to tell us in the comments section below your favourite singles of the month.

I Hate U, I Love U (featuring Olivia O'Brien) - Gnash

Australia loves this tune by American Gnash, we are the only currently to send it to number one (it went to 2 in Finland). And why do we love it? Cause clearly we appreciate a solid tune with a perfect outpouring of emotion. What is essentially a simple song, beautifully simple instrumentation highlights the great vocals and those gut punching lyrics - lyrics that anyone who has loved can understand! While it may be a surprising song to top the charts, it is so richly deserved!

Be The One - Dua Lipa

Now this fun little ditty was actually released in late 2015 but has only now hit it big in Australia and Europe. There is something so appealing about this song, a light ease to it that makes it irresistible. Lipa's voice is sublime and it sounds great on the easy beat. This is a great indication as to where pop is headed in the next few years and it is a great direction - let's hope we hear a lot more from Dua Lipa - she deserves recognition!

Hair (featuring Sean Paul) - Little Mix

Just a week and a half until I get to see Little Mix play in Sydney and I am a grown arse man who is very excited! Little Mix's excellent "Hair" was a pre released before the release of the brilliant "Get Weird" last year, but now we get the full single release - now including some great work from Sean Paul and a trademark quirky film clip. This song is so infectious, within your first few listens it is stuck in your head, and what fun lyrics. Can't wait to see this live!

In the Evening (featuring Melissa Tkautz) - Nick Skitz

Sheryl Lee Ralph's 1984 song is best remembered when it was remixed and re-releasing in 1997, hitting it big here in Australia. It is a fantastically joyous song that is the perfect mix for Nick Skitz's fantastic beats and Melissa Tkautz's pop vocals. And what a joy it is to see Melissa back, I have been such a big fan since the beginning - proudly owning a "Read My Lips" CD Single, "Sexy (is the Word) 12" single and the "Fresh" CD. She has always been an underrated pop force and it is great to see her with such a catchy tune - I'm sure this is going to be my go to party song for the next few months!

Honest - James Yammouni & In Stereo

Now I don't know much about the Janoskians, in fact I didn't know James was a member until I did some research - I guess I am the wrong age demographic. All I know is that this is a great song, like Dua Lipa's "Be The One", there is a subtle ease to this, which makes it pop gold. The vocals are incredibly strong, as is the production. Teamed with In Stereo, from X-Factor, James has really landed on a great sound. I really do look forward to hearing what he has in store for us next!

True Colors (featuring Kesha) - Zedd

If I had to pick a favourite this month, it would definitely have to be this tune - and it only came out on April 29. Zedd's "True Colors" album was amazing, my favourite was his collaboration with Troye Sivan, "Papercut". But he has outdone himself this time by remixing "True Colors" with the amazing Kesha. We all know that Kesha has been going through a rough time (#FreeKesha) and she has been blocked from making the music she wants, so how great it is to hear this tune. Her voice seems to be getting stronger, the vulnerability and raw emotion here is both beautiful and heartbreaking, as are the lyrics, "No I won't apologise for the fire in my eyes". Beautiful, now let's have get that new Kesha album, she deserves to release music on her terms!
