Live Review: Little Mix @ Qudos Arena Sydney - May 13, 2016

I love going to concerts, always have. The memories of concerts from my youth are still so strong. As a teen I got to see people like Madonna, Janet Jackson and Prince. As I got older I went to less concerts, it was a combination of time and money. But at the beginning of this year I made a pledge to see more shows and so far it is going beautifully. Coming up I have tickets for Brandy, Ellie Goulding / Years & Years, Clare Bowen, Troye Sivan and Totally 80s. Already I've seen Belinda Carlisle, 90s Mania, Madonna twice and last night I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Little Mix, and what a brilliant show it was.

Now as a 40 year old man I did feel a little out of place last night, I don't think I've seen that many teen girls in one place, ever. And they were loud, which added an amazing atmosphere as the girls got them excited into an unstoppable frenzy. Then there were the parents, some looked like they were having fun, others looked they wished they would be anywhere else. Then of course, wherever you find pop music, you'll find the appreciative and excitable gay guys.

The ladies of Little Mix are consummate professionals and damn fine performers. The show was a 90 minute feast of visuals, dancing, lights and exceptional singing. In what was essentially a pretty simple set, stairs and a video screen, the ladies and their four, very talented dancers, were given the chance to shine. And during the back to back hits, it was great to see the girls stop and show what natural personalities they are as they engaged with the audience beautifully. They encouraged the crowd to be themselves and not to worry what others think, some of the best advice young people can hear.

They managed to pack a lot of tunes into the night, practically every single they've released, though I would have loved to have heard "Cannonball" and "Word Up", but you can't have it all. There was also a good smattering of the new album. They opened beautifully with "Grown", and my favourite album track of the night was, "Lightning", where the visuals and choreography matched perfectly with their soaring vocals.

The big hits were impressive and made the teen girls get even more frenzied. After a girl power chat, the girls exploded into "Salute", "Move" was a big production number and the ladies encouraged everyone to sing along to "Wings" - hearing a massive arena singing a song is always an amazing feat to see and hear. "Little Me" was emotive, "How You Doin" was humorous and poignant and "DNA" showed a harder edge that was appreciated.

The four singles from the new album were perfect. "Hair" was energetic, "Love Me Like You" was like a welcome old friend and the encore of "Black Magic", showed the girls at their best - great dancing and slick vocals. My favourite song of the night was the brilliant and powerful "Secret Love Song", the girls performing the more stripped back "Version II" from their album. After encouraging the audience to switch their phones on flashlight, the sea of lights in the audience was a wondrous sight to see as the girls belted out a special song. A definite memory I'll remember for a long time.

The less I say about support act, Jai Waetford, the better. He seemed to mime the whole show except for when he played the guitar and covered Bieber's, "Love Yourself". He sounded good on this track, so I have no idea why he decided to mime the rest of the show.

But anyway, Little Mix, the real reason I was there. This was a great show, a fun night from a talented four piece. Little Mix have a great chemistry and stage presence and I for one am really glad I got to get weird with them for the night.
