Album Review: Last Year Was Complicated - Nick Jonas

On solo album number three, Nick Jonas finally shakes the good boy child star tag and instead has taken the position of accomplished and sexy adult pop star.

There is something inherently likeable about Nick Jonas, and it's not just his very good looks and his flirty smile. His recent Carpool Karaoke with best mate Demi Lovato showed just how likeable he is. This quality comes out in spades in "Last Year Was Complicated", sure, it comes out a little perverted and dirty, but you can still see the nice guy underneath. And here's the thing, sometimes when an artist "goes sexy" it doesn't seem authentic, but here with Jonas it just seems a natural evolution. While he still may be a nice guy who once wore a purity ring, he is coming into adulthood and embracing his sexuality. It's not a crime to enjoy sex, and Jonas is letting us all know that it is a pursuit he very much enjoys.

But what about the music, is it any good? Unequivocally yes. While his last album, "Nick Jonas" had some great singles ("Jealous" any one?), the album as a whole wasn't as strong, but here Jonas has worked very hard to make a polished and well rounded album that is the right mix of pop and slight R&B. Then there's his voice which just seems to be getting stronger and stronger. His falsetto is insane and his lower tones are rich and vibrant. This is an easy album to listen to, and one I know I will return to for many listens.

Leading single, "Close", the duet with the awesome Tove Lo, is still as great as it was on release. There is a great beat and the song is so very infectious, that chorus often gets stuck in my head. The pair's voices mash together perfectly and it is special when the pair hit that sweet spot in their voices together. Promo single, "Chainsaw" is probably my favourite song on the album, and I've probably listened to it at least 10 times in the past 48 hours. This is a great mid tempo ballad with another amazing chorus, and love the visual of taking a chainsaw to a lounge. Can we see that shirtless in a video please? ;)

New single, "Under You" is another great mid tempo slice of pop greatness. Nick's voice sits so perfectly in these sexy tracks and the beat on this track is a little dirty and all awesome. "Unhinged" is a torturous ballad with a powerhouse vocal performance and some real emotion that is riveting. "Voodoo" is the perfect opener, a revenge track that is exquisite and "Bacon" is a great fun track.

While Nick Jonas may not have reached his full potential yet, he is well on the way. "Last Year Was Complicated" is his best album yet and he will only get better from here. A very solid effort from an amazing pop star.
