First album review of the year and we've gone all country. But how could we resist the powers of Australia's number one all girl group, The McClymonts? And taking a step further into the pop/country genre, "Endless" is up there as one of their best albums.
The McClymonts have become an institution in the Australian country scene, with polished tunes and great vocals, they deserve all the attention they've received. Their first album, "Chaos and Bright Lights" is still one I return to a lot and I remember seeing them years ago in concert at Penrith, and they were brilliant. So it's always great when they release new music.
As with any good artists, the sound of the ladies is evolving and it's a pleasure to hear. They've kept those country sensibilities but they are slowly creeping towards a pop sound. While many would compare it to the sound of Taylor Swift, it's more like the best work of Shania Twain. And with the 90s sound making such a big comeback, the album still sounds incredibly fresh.
The key to the brilliance of The McClymonts is the synchronicity of their sound. The sisters harmonise together perfectly and their voices mesh together so well. And as songwriters, they have beautiful things to say.
So what's good on this album? Well first things first, these are all good songs. It's a cohesive album with a great sound. But for stand outs, you can't look past the duet with Ronan Keating, "When We Say It's Forever" - which has single written all over it. It's a beautiful song with some lovely lyrics. Those harmonises are exquisite and Ronan works perfectly with the ladies. It's the kind of the track you want keeping putting on repeat.
"Like We Used To" is great pop/country. It has a fresh sound, while still having a classic vibe. First single, "House" is anthemic with its pounding drums and big vocals. "Nothing Good" and "Endless" are great summer tunes. Light, easy and very listenable. "Let You Down" is catchy with a great chorus and "Don't Wish It All Away" is a very solid tune.
It's Australia Day this week, so how about supporting some great Aussie music and buying a great album from some true Australian talent?!
