Happy 2017! In 2015 we did a Top 5 list every week and they were really popular and then we were slack last year and didn't do many. Well 2017 is a new year, so get ready for a Top 5 list every week. And we thought we needed to start back with a real icon, a true dive. So we present to you our Top 5 Celine Dion songs.
What's your favourite Celine song? There's a lot to choose from. Celine has been releasing French songs since 1981 and English language songs since 1990 and still releases great music, her latest single, "Recovering" made our Top 50 singles of last year. "Recovering" almost made this list, it is heartbreaking beautiful. Some of those other big ballads almost made it too, "Think Twice" and the melodramatically brilliant, "All Coming Back To Me Now". And early track, "Where Does My Heart Beat Now?" is a favourite as it was the first Celine song I heard.
She is an icon, an amazing vocalists and a damn nice lady! I saw her play the Sydney Entertainment Centre many years ago, and she was brilliant. My list is very different to many fans I'm sure and the biggest hits are not necessarily my choices - people may be horrified "My Heart Will Go On" or "Because You Loved Me" didn't make my list. So share your favourite Celine songs in the comments section below, love to know what you love.
5 - If You Asked Me To
Originally a Patti LaBelle song, Celine took this Diane Warren penned song and made it her own. So much so, she was the one who got the hit with the song. Celine has such a beautifully unique voice and here her voice is allowed to shine. Then as choir backs her in the chorus her voice soars and even back in 1992, we could see the massive star she was going to become. A simple tune with a lot of heart, something Celine does well.
4 - I'm Alive
2002 saw Celine release her, "A New Day Has Come" album, and it seemed like it had. There was a freshness to the music that was undeniable. The best of the bunch was this pop gem. The "Wake Up Mix", which featured a sample of Blondie's "Heart of Glass" was sheer perfection. The song and the riff fit together seamlessly and Celine's vocals had an airy and light feel that was quite hypnotising. This was another time Celine proved that she was not a one trick pony, she could cross genres and sound just as amazing.
3 - Taking Chances
Written by Kara DioGuardi and ex-Eurythmics member Dave Stewart, this is a beautifully anthemic song from Celine about taking chances in life. This inspirational tune has a beautiful build, starting subtle before exploding with that powerhouse performance we have come to expect from Celine. And love the nod to the Eurythmics with the lyric, "So talk to me, like lovers do". Released in 2007, Celine proved she was still a major force in pop music.
2 - Falling Into You
The "Falling Into You" album may just be my favourite Celine album, and it's title track is just fantastic. There is a playful quality to this ballad, partly from the coy delivery from Celine and the soft but powerful beat that continues through the track. Ms Dion knows her way around a ballad, her voice so perfectly emotive. Sounding ethereal, Celine really shines with this beautiful song.
1 - Misled
"Misled" is not a typical Celine single, especially when the first few singles from "The Color of Love" came out and those ballads were so massive. This a true pop diva's tune with a great 90s beat and some brilliant vocals. There's a camp brilliance to the tune, It's a pop soul tune where Celine gets to have a bit attitude, the tune is fantastic in so many ways. It's a great diss track with a killer chorus and these great lyrics, "If you think you're in my head, you've been seriously misled." 24 years later and this song still makes me smile.
