Top 5 Songs: Natalie Cole

So like everyone else, today I heard about the sad loss of the very talented Natalie Cole, and was incredibly sad. What an incredible talent she was, and she will be sadly missed. I thought to celebrate her life and career it would be best to have a look at my Top 5 favourite songs of this wonderful lady. Rest in peace Ms Natalie Cole, you will be missed.

5 - This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)

This was Natalie Cole's debut single and really did announce her presence, hitting Top Ten worldwide and winning her a Grammy. This is such a brilliant song, so vibrant and upbeat. I got to sing some of this in a show last year, and it really is such a special song, even if it is 41 years old! Natalie always had such a strong voice, and it was certainly on show here. A truly remarkable debut single that set up one helluva career.

4 - Pink Cadillac

Bruce Springsteen recorded this as a B-Side to his mega hit "Dancing in the Dark", but it's Cole's version that is most famous, going top ten worldwide. Cole really could make some vibrant music as this song shows, it is so much fun, and really epitomises the 80s. Her voice sounds beautifully raw with a brilliant deep tone over those great synth beats. This song makes me want to dance, loving playing this again today!

3 - Wild Women Do

The "Pretty Woman" soundtrack was epic, there were some brilliant tunes on that album. There was Roxette's "It Must Have Been Love", Go West's "King of Wishful Thinking" and then there was Natalie Cole's truly fun, "Wild Women Do". Continuing to showcase her pop skills, Natalie belts out over that great beat. This is a brilliantly produced track and a real crown in Cole's massive discography.

2 - Unforgettable (with Nat King Cole)

Now I know many would put this at number one, it is such an iconic song. Winning song of the year at 1992 Grammy's, this duet is incredibly beautiful and emotional. This was one her father's biggest hits in the 50s, and it was remixed and her exquisite vocals were added. They match together so perfectly and the song is a really a lesson in quality singing. In fact, the whole "Unforgettable" was just that, unforgettable. It's certainly bringing a tear to the eye today!

1 - Miss You Like Crazy

1989 has always been my favourite year in music, and it is proven once again with my pick for top spot on my Natalie Cole countdown. "Miss You Like Crazy", a US and UK Top Ten single, is a beautiful ballad that showcases Cole's vocals. Lyrically it's brilliant, a song I have truly loved from 1989 until now. Have a listen again and let's remember this amazing talented performer, the world is a darker place now that she is gone!
