Single number two for the "Rebel Heart" and it's a stunning ballad, a beautiful example of how Madonna can command an incredible ballad. For anyone who doubted that Madonna had returned to form, they need to listen to this song and watch the incredible video.
"Ghosttown" has been available for fans since just before Christmas. After the whole leak debacle, this was one of the first six songs which were released for the album's pre-sale. It became an instant fan favourite, and most believed it would be a great single - they got their wish. But it does show the greatness of the song, that even though it has been around for months, I still am playing it several times a day. Even though I personally would have loved "Joan of Arc" as the second single, it is a sublime choice for the follow up to "Living For Love".
Clearly Madonna and team are very keen to get this song out there, she's been appearing in a lot of places causing a lot of controversy. It is so funny how people get so agitated by her antics, clearly they are playing into her hands. The woman knows how to shamelessly self promote, and I love her for it.
Now let's talk about the brilliance of the song. I've reviewed "Rebel Heart" twice, here's what I said about the song before:
"This one has been a favourite of many Madonna fans, a sweeping ballad that is really a showcase for Madonna's sweet vocals, she sounds as good as she ever has. This is a hauntingly beautiful track that shows the evolution of Madonna as a singer and songwriter. "When it all falls down, we'll be two souls in a ghost town". It's stuff for the heart, an amazing ballad to add to the long list of classic Madonna ballads."
And:
"Ghost Town" is a haunting and beautiful ballad that's become an instant fan favourite."
Listening to the song it is easy to hear how great Madonna sounds on the track. Many have compared her vocals to Karen Carpenter's - a great compliment. This is the best ballad of the year and is brilliantly written and produced. Love this song, love, love, love.
Now to the amazing film clip. It is the perfect blend of style and substance. Madonna looks amazing, the costuming is exquisite and how great it is to see Terrence Howard in the clip. That tango between the pair is fabulous and I was ready to shed a tear by the end. This is a great one for the fans, with Madonna early in the clip looking at photos of her late mother, Madonna, and her beautiful daughter, Lourdes. The apocalyptic world is spectacular and this will go down as being one of Madonna's best clips, not just in the past few years, but ever. It is that good. Seriously, is there a better video artist in the world?
I worry that when I write about Madonna I just ramble. She means the world to me and I adore her music and work. I'm so excited to list this catchy and stunning tune as my single of the week - guaranteed this will be one of my top songs of the year. Now please, pretty please, radio, start playing this song - it deserves to be a hit!!
