I've completed a couple of Top 5 lists so far and I thought it was time to add an Aussie artist to the list, and what better Aussie artist than this countries finest vocalists of all time, the wondrous Ms Kate Ceberano.
Now I have loved Kate for quite some time, loved her "I'm Talking" stuff when I was young, and then her debut solo album, "Brave" came out in 1989, my self described favourite year in music. In fact there was a rumour going around my school that Kate was my Aunty, sure I started that rumour, but it still existed! That rumour came about one English lesson when I was reading Smash Hits in free reading time (how great was that magazine?) and was reading an interview with Kate when a kid said a horrid comment about her and I told them not to, they said it again, I said she was my Aunty. Another kid backed me up and the original kid apologised profusely. It didn't matter that Kate and I looked nothing alike, some people still believed it! I still like to refer to her as Aunty Kate.
So, to Aunty Kate and her best 5 songs. She has such an amazing back catalogue that I truly struggled finding just 5. There were a few songs I would have loved to have included but they just missed out, tracks like "See Right Through" from the underrated "Think About It" album, her stunning cover of "Calling You" and the camp goodness of "Young Boys Are My Weakness". The I'm Talking stuff is also amazing, especially, "Trust Me", but I decided not to include it here.
So without further adieu I present my Top 5 Kate Ceberano tracks:
5 - All I Want Is You
From the stunning opening, "I was looking out my back window", through to the catchy chorus, this is a brilliant track. This is such a beautiful laidback love song that allows Kate's voice to shine. She has such an incredible voice and the "Blue Box" album really showcased that - this is that album's best track.
4 - Pash
I still play "Pash" a lot, and whenever I play it at work, everyone sings along. This may be Kate's catchiest song, as she repeats "Pash me", you can't help but sing along. This is such a funky track with some great bass and drum instrumentation. A great track to dance to, this was a well deserved Top Ten smash for Ms Ceberano.
3 - Brave
It was so great reading Kate Ceberano's autobiography and hearing her talk about writing this song. It is a stunning ballad and demonstrates just how strong the "Brave" album was as a whole. The chorus is glorious, when she sings, "And I won't ever walk away, I'll just be brave and stay", my heart soars. It's a wonderful track and I get excited when it is randomly chosen on my iPod, then I sing along loudly.
2 - Time To Think
It is such a major crime this song wasn't a hit, it is quite simply brilliant. The lyrics here are wonderful, telling the story of a women who had to get away from a boyfriend who may have cheated, but she can't stop thinking about him. "I guess you're sleeping as its 4am, the world is in a coma and I'm not used to sleeping in a single bed - and I can't get warm." These lyrics get me everytime! If you haven't heard the song, please watch the link now.
1 - Bedroom Eyes
There could be no other pick for the number one spot, "Bedroom Eyes", the former number two Aussie single, is glorious. It is iconically Kate and was in fact the highest selling single by an Aussie artist in 1989. This mid tempo ballad has a truly great beat and it pretty damn sexy. Kate sings beautifully in parts, and breathes seductively in others. This is a great song, still, after 26 years!
So what are you favourite Kate Ceberano songs? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment sections below.
