Top 5 Songs: Sugababes

Sugababes truly are one of my favourite girl groups of all time, even if they have had more line up changes than Destiny's Child. Over their eleven year career they had some amazing singles and some albums I loved listening to. And while the three original girls are reforming under a new name, Sugababes as we knew them, are gone. So time to look back at their best five songs (well according to me).

I have loved every album from the ladies, they have produced some beautiful tracks over the years and rightfully sold a lot of records. Not as many in Australia as they did in the UK, but they have certainly had some big hits worldwide. Now compiling my favourite five I haven't chosen their biggest hits, yeah, I love "Freak Like Me" and "Push the Button", but there's songs I like more. Now there are a few tracks I really wish could have made the list, songs like "Red Dress", "About a Girl", "Denial" and "Overload". I was even obsessed with their last track, "Freedom", which saw the end of their career. But the five on this list are songs I will be revisiting for years. When looking at the list I realised I really do love their moody ballads.

5 - Run For Cover

What a beautifully dramatic song that starts with such luscious strings. While I adored "Overload", it was the band's third single (second in Australia) that made me really fall in love with them. With wonderful harmonies, the girl's voices sound amazing. Lyrically it's also brilliant and quite dark, the end of chorus, "You never seem to wonder, how much you make me suffer. I speak it from the inside", is truly beautiful. It's not a well known Sugababes song, it didn't even make their greatest hits album, so check it out if you don't know it.

4 - Shape

I was surprised to find a lot of critics thought this was the weakest song on the fab "Angels with Dirty Faces" album, when it's my favourite. It uses a Sting sung sample from his track, "The Shape of my Heart", which was also used by Craig David around the same time. This mid tempo ballad with old school R&B was all about the lyrics, "...a girls got more to do then be the way you think a woman should, I'm taking it into my own hands." Beautiful and insightful stuff.

3 - Easy

Fuck this is a sexy song! From that very dirty beat to those overly sexual but cleverly funny lyrics, this is a song I love. The first new single from their greatest hits album, this was a bloody good song that I still play a lot, even after all these years. Those lyrics, they still give me a smile, "Got such a pretty kitty, boy I know you want to pet it" and "I got a landing strip clear for you at the airport". Great song.

2 - Ugly

What a great song with a brilliant message. This track from the brilliant "Taller in More Ways" album was written after the great Dallas Austin read some of the negative online comments about the girls appearance. This midtempo pop song has a great beat, but those lyrics are so powerful and are still poignant after 10 years, "But there will always be the one who will say something bad to make them feel great". A powerful song that deserved to go to number one.

1 - Change

This was close with "Ugly" for the number one spot, but I couldn't go past this song. From the second I heard it, to when I played it again five minutes ago, I loved this song. A more mature sound for the girls, it is a brilliant showcase for the girls voices and harmonies. This bittersweet and melancholic track is all about trying to move on after a relationship breaks down. Soulful and sweeping, this is a perfect pop song for me. Lovely stuff!
