Tove Lo is a pretty fascinating pop star, the more I hear from her - the more I like her. So listening to her new album, "Lady Wood", I have grown a new respect for a very, very talented pop star who just keeps getting better.
Tove Lo keeps releasing great music, "Habits" was massive, and "Talking Body" was sublime. Then there's her collaborations, including brilliant duets with Nick Jonas, Years & Years and Adam Lambert (wouldn't you love access to her phone book?). "Lady Wood" feels like Tove Lo's chance to shine on her own.
This is a good pop album, it is produced beautifully and has such a great pop sensibility to it. The album has a great cohesion which makes it a great journey. This is escapist pop, turn it up, forget your problems and enter Tove's world where sex is good and ladies are powerful. Only two songs clock in over 4 minutes, so these are short, sharp explorations into pop perfection. Tove has a rich voice and her pop is no holds bar, this is a woman in control, who knows what she is doing.
Yesterday we reviewed Lady Gaga's "Joanne" and lamented the lack of catchy choruses, here they are delivered in droves. These are songs designed to get stuck in your head, and stuck they will. Lead single, "Cool Girl" is a perfect example. This is one infectious song with a great chorus, it's fun, it's empowering, it's a great song.
Title track, "Lady Wood", is a funky song with a solid beat. It is a great song and could easily be a single. Promo single, "Influence" is another great tune with some smart lyrics and a good beat. "True Disaster" and "Flashes" are great songs that are all about good vocals and that awesome beat. "Vibes" adds a great element of folk, while "Imaginary Friend" is catchy and powerful - love the talking at the end of the track. Meanwhile, "WTF Love Is" ends the album on a cheeky and fabulous note.
Tove Lo is yet to have the level fame she deserves. She is a great artist making wonderful pop and deserves for this album to be huge. "Lady Wood" is an exceptional pop album from a wonderful singer.
