Other genres come and go, but pop will always be on top. You just can't go past a good pop album and the UK pop sound really is supreme. So it is with great joy that I say that Nathan Sykes's debut album, "Unfinished Business" is truly one of the best pop albums of the year.
The Wanted were a great boy band who did the impressive thing by breaking into the tough US market. Now that they are no more, it is great that Nathan is branching out on his own. Sykes deserves a successful solo career, he has a great voice. It is rich, it is textured and it is emotive. He sounds great on this album and these songs are perfect for him.
The album is beautifully produced, it is slick and sophisticated and has so many catchy tunes that are the right level of infectious. Songs like, "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait", "Money" and "Famous" have the perfect pop choruses; ones designed to get stuck in your head. There's also a great amount of ballads which really showcase the talented of Sykes. "Over and Over Again" is such a beautiful tune, and the version with Ariana Grande is sublime. Their voices meld together perfectly, which was evident from their "Mortal Instruments" track, "Almost Is Never Enough", so it was great they got to work together again. "I Can't Be Mad" and "There's Only One Of You" are also other nice examples of simple ballads that are exquisite.
"Kiss Me Quick" was such a great first single, a brilliant piece of pop that again is so infectious. My favourite track though has to be, "Give It Up" with G-Eazy. Surprisingly this was Sykes's worst performing single. I adore this track, it will definitely appear in my Top Ten Singles of 2016. Sykes's voice is seductive and playful, as are the lyrics. There's a perfect yearning and the beat is great. This track has been on repeat for months.
If you want a very pop album that harks back to the great pop sounds of the 90s, then look no further than "Unfinished Business". It is a solid album filled with amazing songs from a very talented singer. Bravo Nathan Sykes, this album is wonderful.
