Album Review: Version Of Me - Melanie C

We all loved the Spice Girls; and let's be honest, if you didn't, there must be something wrong with you. We also always knew that Melanie C was the strongest vocalist. And now, 20 years after the release of "Wannabe" (um, what?), it is clear that Melanie C has had the best solo career. Even more reason to be excited, her new album, "Version of Me" may just be her best album yet!

There is such a strength and beauty to Melanie's voice that is unmistakable. She has often concentrated on the rock side of pop, showing off those great vocals. This time, she has made a more dance/pop record and it is stunning. She still has a chance to showcase those amazing vocals, but there's also a great beat - and we here at Internal Jukebox love to dance.

First single, "Anymore" is one of our favourite songs of the year. Guaranteed in just a few short weeks when we countdown our favourite songs of the year, it will be riding high in the Top Ten. It is the perfect pop anthem that makes us want to sing and dance. Thankfully it is not the only corker on the album, there are many more tunes to truly love.

"Dear Life" is a great start and perfect introduction of what to expect from the album. "Something For the Fire" has so much passion and yearning with a wonderful ending. "Version Of Me" is probably the strongest song that isn't "Anymore". Beginning with the beautiful lyrics, "This is not your playground", the song is beautiful and strong with a powerful message. Melanie's voice is sublime here.

"Numb" is vibrant and very current with a solid beat, this should be a single. "Room For Love" is a grower with a good beat, while "Unraveling" is a unique track that plays beautifully with its tempo. Then the album finishes very strongly with "Blame", another great tune that plays with tempo and then delivers a great pop tune.

"Version of Me" presents a new side of Melanie C, a side that embraces the dancier side of pop. The Hex Hector version of "I Turn To You" was such a massive tune, it feels almost like this is the follow up to that tune, all these years later. This is a bloody good album from a truly magnificent pop star.
