Album Review: Honey - Katy B

It's been a crime that Katy B hasn't hit it big here in Australia, from the moment I heard "Katy on a Mission" and "Lights On", I was in - hook, line and sinker. And what a great joy to see that Katy B is back on top with her simply stunning new album, "Honey",

What a great back catalogue Ms B has, besides the tracks I mentioned earlier, tunes like "5am" and "Crying For No Reason" are still getting great rotation from me, and the new songs will certainly join these classics.

While the last album, "Little Red", was a little more pop, "Honey" certainly hasn't lost all its pop sounds. Sure, the album is a perfect combo of techno, hip hop and drum & bass, but there is still a great pop sensibility at its beautiful heart.

This album is slickly produced, the amount of guests artists and producers is staggering - a who's who of the UK's best. The amazing thing is that even though there are so many people who have worked on the album, it still has a great identity, it is clearly Katy B and is still totally cohesive. These are amazing songs led beautifully by Katy B's strong and distinctive voice - she has a special gift. I love how emotive she can sound, even over a heavy dance beat.

Single, "Who Am I" was one of my favourite singles of last month (even made my blog of best six singles), it is a stunning duet with Katy and Craig David - who is having such a great year! Add Major Lazer and it is perfectly indicative of how amazing the collaborations on this album work.

Now speaking of collabs, Katy's first UK number one came via, "Turn the Music Louder", her tune with KDA and Tinie Tempah. Another example of Katy being the master of collaborations. Katy's vocals are powerful, passionate and perfectly paired with Tempah's unique style.

Other standout tracks include promo single and title track, "Honey" - a laid back, 90s sounding tune with some awesome synths and great vocals. "So Far Away" is impassioned and has a great, constant beat and "Dark Delirium" is quite majestic, delicate beats contrasting with harder ones and great lyrics. "Heavy" is a major stand out, it's passionate and angry, a complex and beautiful contradiction with the music, voice and lyrics.

2016 is truly producing some amazing albums, and this is another one. Katy B is a true star with a killer album, again. Here's hoping the rest of the world falls under the hypnosis of her brilliant voice and beats.
