Album Review: Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late

Last week, without any warning or promotion, Drake released a new album, "If You're Reading This It's Too Late". It could be seen as an attempt to do a "Beyonce", but in fact it's probably more likely he's trying to burn through his contract with Cash Money Records. But the question remains, is this a new album or just a new mixtape? I'm not sure I'm "qualified" to make the distinction. But enough of that, I was keen to hear the album, I'm seeing Drake perform in Melbourne next week and wanted to hear his new stuff.

Let's get it out there, this is solid work, a good album, not his best, but certainly a good album. There's nothing here as strong as "Marvin's Room" or "Hold On, We're Going Home", in fact there's nothing here that's really a single - but pieced together as a whole, it's great album.

Drake is a natural story teller and that's what he does here, the dark music is the background, his rhymes are what's important. His poetic words and smooth voice are a perfect match. And lyrically it is quite confrontational, Drake is a natural storyteller who seemingly has an overwhelming lot of feelings and certainly a lot to say. As a pop fan some parts of the album may just be a little too hard for me, but as an overall experience, it's enjoyable if not a little claustrophobic.

Let's talk highlights here. I do love "Madonna", and not just for the title. The sample of Ginuwine's "So Anxious" mixes perfectly with Drake's rhyme. "Preach" is a big party track as this album has, and the guest spot from PARTYNEXTDOOR is a welcome break in the album. Drake's song to his mother, "You & the 6" is particularly strong - a great insight into Drake. The lyrics are poignant, heartfelt and very, very good. Probably the highlight on the album. Also love, "Jungle", it's more old school R&B, a beautiful laidback track that's easy to sit back and enjoy.

While it won't be my favourite album of the year, it's certainly a strong effort from a great artist who I am very excited to see play the Rod Laver Arena next week (check in then for my review of the gig).
