EP Review: Ain't No Little Girl - Kasey Chambers

Kasey Chambers is back and she is sounding better than ever with the release of her new EP, "Ain't No Little Girl", a precursor to her upcoming album, "Dragonfly". The whole EP is classic Kasey, emotional, energetic and always entertaining.

As soon as I knew the EP was coming, I knew I had to pre-order the EP on iTunes. So Friday morning while rushing to get ready for work, I still had to download the EP and get it on my iPod. Naturally I listened to it three times on the bus on the way to work - and at the end of the trip I was well and truly in love.

The four tracks are so different and showcase all the reasons we adore Ms Chambers so much. It is a such a well rounded EP and produced so beautifully. Kasey is sounding stronger than ever and as always, her songwriting shines.

Lead single, "Ain't No Little Girl", is Kasey's most commercial sounding song in years. It is a beautiful blend of country and alt-rock. If there is any justice, this track will get loads of radio airplay. The vocals are sublime, so beautifully smooth one moment, totally vulnerable the next. The guitar is striking and the lyrics are on point, when she sings, "Well a lesson is learned", it hits deep. This is a stunning song and proof that the best is yet to come from Kasey.

And what a treat that Australia's number one female country artist has teamed up with the number one male artist, Keith Urban. Their track, "If We Had a Child", is beautiful and sweet. Their vocals are so luscious and pair perfectly together. The track really does make your heart soar. I love when you get to hear the sweet side of Kasey and the sweet part of her voice. What a great song.

"Only Child" sounds like a natural progression from the "Bittersweet" album. It's the Kasey we know and love, going full blues and roots, belting out the song with gusto and passion. Love the instrumentation here and the distortion in Kasey's voice during the song's build. It's a powerful tune and a pleasure to listen to.

Final track, "Talkin' Baby Blues" shows Kasey's playful side. This is such a fun song, and one I had a few giggles with during my first few listens. An autobiographical track that has the right level of self deprecation and attitude. Got to love all the references from The Sopranos to Kanye West and Fat Albert to Lucinda Williams. She also manages to poke fun at her own love life. The best line is no doubt, "Am I not pretty enough? Who gives a fuck!".

What a great EP, four perfect tracks that make me desperately want Kasey's new album, and a tour of Sydney!
