Live Review: Troye Sivan @ Hordern Pavilion - 3.8.16

The fans had to battle torrential rain, but Troye Sivan's Sydney leg of his "Blue Neighbourhood" tour, more than made us forget the wet with a stunning concert that was a showcase for his truly special voice.

I don't believe I've ever been that wet before. For an hour we lined up outside the Hordern Pavilion in some of the heaviest rain I have ever seen. Doors were supposed to open at 6.30, not sure if they did cause we were snaked around the theatre and didn't get in until about 7.15, saturated. Naturally I didn't bring an umbrella, thank God for friendly faces in the crowd who banded together to help each other "stay dry".

But let's not take away from what was a sensational concert. With simple staging, it was all about Troye and his voice. He sounded flawless, clearly the beautiful tones you hear on the album are not manufactured - he is the real deal. It also helps that he is pretty damn cute as well - he really is the perfect package.

All the songs I wanted were there, singing most (all?) of the "Blue Neighbourhood" album. The crowd were loud and knew every lyric, going crazy throughout the whole show. And what a diverse crowd, so many young teens, loads of gay men and then the parents, who seemed to be enjoying themselves too.

Show highlights were many, it was so good to hear, "Wild" live, it is such a special song. "Fools" and "Bite" were as great as I wanted them to be. "DKLA" was moody, haunting and beautiful, plus it was wonderful to see Troye do part of the awesome rap.

Was definitely hoping to hear, "Happy Little Pill", and loved the stripped back version we heard. "Youth', as the encore, went off, as did "Lost Boy". My favourite of the evening was, "Talk Me Down". That is such a beautiful song and hearing it live with Troye slaying the vocals, was a special treat indeed. An emotional song that was given an emotional performance.

Special mention must be made to "Heaven". It's a song I've always liked, but after hearing Troye talk about it and sing about it, has made me love it. In a special moment, Troye thanked those that came with their Pride flags and told us he wrote "Heaven" about his struggles at fifteen to come to terms with his sexuality. This is so universal for gay men and he was so eloquent when speaking, what an inspiration for our queer youth.

What a great night, even though I was soaked, I enjoyed every moment of his amazing performance. Come back again Troye, just don't play at the Hordern next time!
