EP Review: Belong - Pia Toscano

Welcome back Pia Toscano, it's been way too long. Pia has one of those truly unique voices, strong and powerful but also with lovely, beautiful soft tones. How she is not a mega star is beyond me! Pia's new EP, "Belong" is quite simply perfect - in so many ways!

Pia is up there with Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood as one of the best voices to ever appear on American Idol. When she was eliminated early, I was devastated, like so many. Especially cause I live in Australia and I couldn't vote, and vote for her I would have.

Her debut single, "This Time", was brilliant. A great pop song with kick arse lyrics and excellent vocals - I still play it a lot. Then we had a few features from Pia, but not much more. So thank Santa Claus for this release.

With just five songs Pia is able to take us on a great musical journey, we get powerful ballads, seductive grooves and full on pop/rock. She runs the gamut and the end result is perfection. This is as solid as an EP can get. Now who do we have to kill for a full album?

Title track, "Belong" is stunning. Those strings bring a beautiful elegance and the piano brings a dark undertone. Pia's voice soars, those notes near the end are everything, and the lyrics are very heartfelt, "I used to run from the rainy days, now I love the lightning". This is a woman who is growing and learning from her mistakes. It is powerful and it is incredible.

"Pyro" has a very different feel. It's seductive and it's very infectious. Right from the opening vocals, where she purrs perfectly, this song brings you in. Then the beat kicks in and the song is exquisite. This is the standout track on the EP, and a damn fine song.

"Liar Liar" is up next, and again we get to experience a whole new track. This is an angrier track and Pia's voice is phenomenal as she lets us know exactly what this guy has done wrong. There's a great structure to the song and it's produced beautifully. Love the lighter verses and then the power of the chorus, both musically and vocally. And the end, "You're such a fucking liar" is the perfect end.

We're treated to another big ballad next, On "You'll Be King" Pia sounds beautiful and this really is such a lovely tune. There's such a sweet melancholic feel to the song, Pia really can make her heartbreak sound beautiful. Those endnotes kill me!

Finally we have, "Go Missing", and it's nice that the EP finishes with a funky tune. That beat is great and Pia is again delivering those seductive vocals she does so well. This sounds like a great Selena Gomez song, and that is a good thing. Love when she cooes, "Let's go missing", before that beat drops in.

This is a great EP and needs to be heard, tell your friends people - Pia needs and deserves an audience.
