EP Review: Part One - Guy Sebastian

The evolution of Guy Sebastian is quite a fascinating one, and an inspirational one. From very daggy Australian Idol winner to Australia's number one R&B artist. Now with his new EP, "Part One", he shows us that his best is still to come.

Confession time, I voted for Shannon Noll and wasn't the biggest fan of Guy's earliest work. It wasn't until he released, "Kryptonite" that I started taking notice. He was making interesting music and was becoming a true artist. Then over the years he has continued to make fascinating music that kept getting better.

Guy deserves to break in other territories. We know he's amazing here in Australia, the rest of the world needs to discover that too. With this EP Guy has done something great, he's taken control and made a six track EP that is quite exceptional. Playing with genre and styles, Guy's voice takes centre stage and his lyrics are stronger than ever.

First single, "Candle", deserved more than it got. It seemed to confuse radio - I guess good music does that. Why do we have to pigeon hole singers and insist they make the same music and then criticise them when they do? A song written for his wife, the hard beats are a great juxtaposition to the sweet lyrics. The piano at the beginning is also lovely and then when the chorus kicks in we have a completely different song. It is here Guy's voice shines, the harshness is brilliant.

New single, "Set in Stone" is truly beautiful. And the hit it deserves to be - even hitting number one on the iTunes chart. It is the safest song on the EP, and the most like Guy's previous work. Guy knows his way around a love song and this is one of his best.

The rest of the songs are also great, "Home" has great vocals and the build up to the simple but effective chorus is something very special. "Mind on You" has a nice ease to it and a cruisy feel. It has a fun chorus and is a very catchy song. "Small Talk" has a great beat and the falsetto is wonderful; while "Conscious" has a really interesting feel - part love song, part electronica.

This is a solid EP from one of Australia's best vocalists. It's inspired to play some of my favourite Guy Sebastian tracks this morning, and there are just so many. Have a listen to "Part One" and get excited for the release of "Part Two".
