Album Review: Emotion - Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly Rae Jepsen is back to prove she's not a one trick pony, and you know what? She does it. Carly Rae has managed to produce an amazing pop album that is both strong and surprising. Certainly one of the better pop albums of 2015!

"Call Me Maybe" was a true pop phenomenon, a worldwide massive hit that may just have been a little bit of a curse. Everything she has done since has been compared and she certainly hasn't been able to have the same level of success (though her brilliant duet, "Good Time", with Owl City, did hit number one in a few countries). To be honest, the "Kiss" album was not the best vehicle to support "Call Me Maybe". Sure, there were a few good songs, I loved "Tonight I'm Getting Over You", but most of the album felt like filler.

That all changes with "Emotion", this is a strong album and there are no weak tracks here. In fact, I enjoyed every track on the album, obviously some more than others. The album feels a lot more focused than "Kiss", it is totally energetic with a great retro 80s feel. Her voice is getting stronger and the production is not just cookie cutter pop, it is slick, polished and first class.

First single, "I Really Like You" is a cracker. This is infectious pop designed to get stuck in your internal jukebox. It's really a crime that this wasn't a bigger hit, it is pop gold. That chorus is seriously catchy.

Second single, "Run Away With Me", is just as catchy, with a great summer anthem feel. The song has a great build and the different levels throughout the song are exciting and strong. This is a good song that deserves to be a hit.

Other standouts include the Sia co-write, "Making the Most of the Night", a moody track that takes Carly Rae down a different path, and the beat is incredible. Title track, "Emotion", is also super strong. It's catchy and sounds like another pop anthem. "When I Needed You" is a great song with a good beat and amazing vocals. I feel like I could list any number of songs as also being highlights as they are all good. Here's a few more, "Warm Blood", "All That" and "Let's Get Lost".

You should definitely get the deluxe album, as the bonus tracks are some of the strongest. I am so in love with "Black Heart". This is so different for her, the beat is hypnotising and the track is intriguing. "I Didn't Just Come Here To Dance" is super fun and "Love Again" is one of those great sing along tracks.

I was expecting to like this album, I had heard good things. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much I truly did love "Emotion". This is a strong album from an artist who is at the top of the pop game. Great stuff indeed!
