Album Review: Kylie Christmas - Kylie Minogue

Well, it's that time of the year again, Christmas, so here come the Christmas themed albums. Some of them bring a new meaning to the word dodgey, others are simply fantastic. Thank God Kylie has just released an album that is so festive and camp that it can't help but deliver some Christmas themed joy.

It seems strange that Kylie hadn't yet released a Christmas album. Sure, she's had some Christmas tunes, but this is her first full blown Christmas album - and boy it was worth the wait. I love reticking the Christmas songs every year and playing my favourite Christmas tunes, now Kylie will happily be played alongside the likes of Mariah and Jewel.

This album is festive and camp, full of frivolity and abandon. It is just so much fun and so infectious, that if you don't enjoy it, you may just be the Grinch. While Kylie may not be the one of the world's best vocalists, she handles these songs perfectly and the production is slick and polished. The album seems a combination of 50s boldness, 70s disco and modern camp, all of the things that make Kylie so wonderful.

First single, "Only You", her duet with actor and talk show host, James Corden, is brilliant. While a cover of the Yazoo classic may not scream Christmas, it is perfect on this album. James Corden sounds great, the pair have great chemistry and the song gives you all the feels. This is a great track for any time of the year, a brilliant cover of an already great song.

Second single, and bizarrely only a bonus track, is the duet with her sister, Dannii, "100 Degrees". This is everything I want in a collaboration between the two, full on disco pop. This is an Australian Christmas song and it has such slick production I just want to get up and dance. This is so much fun, and it is so camp, gay clubs are going to have this on repeat throughout December - and so will I!

The 50s inspired stuff is also great. The opener, "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" is all grand with its fanfare and the duet with Frank Sinitra, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", is all class. Her classic pop covers are also perfection, Chrissie Hynde's "2000 Miles" is a beautiful rendition of a great song, and teaming up with Iggy Pop on the Nu Wave, "Christmas Wrapping" is inspired. We also get the Christmas song Kylie has been most famous for so far, the sexy "Santa Baby".

One of the great things about this album is that there are some originals that more than hold their own. The Chris Martin penned, "Everyday's Like Christmas" is awesome, as are "White December" and "Christmas Isn't Christmas 'Til You Get Here".

This is not just a good Christmas album, this is a great Kylie album. It's so much fun and really does get you in the Christmas mood. Turn it loud, pour the wine, invite the friends round and have a great Christmas - courtesy of Kylie!
