It's November, so it must be time for a new One Direction album, the fifth in five years. The sad news, this may just be their last album - thank heavens it's a stellar one ... as usual!
Well it looks like we may have come to the end of a great era. Over five albums, the gents of One Direction have produced some amazing music and have had such a great evolution. From full blown pop, to a more rock feel and now a more evolved and polished rock / pop sound, the lads have grown with each release. If we want to look on the bright side of things, if this is the last album, which I imagine it will be, this is a brilliant way to step out - on top of their game.
There is a definite rock feel to this album, almost a 1970s rock sound. This doesn't sound like the world's most famous boyband, this sounds like a great 70s rock band. There's also a touch of the 50s and 60s in there, and you can certainly hear Fleetwood Mac, The Beach Boys and naturally, The Beatles, in their work. It's such an easy listen, these are great songs that are well written and slickly produced. The vocals are spot on and the gents have certainly grown as vocalists.
The other big question this album provokes besides, is this their last one, is, what do they sound like without Zayn Malik? While his outstanding vocals will always be missed, in the washup, it is not overly noticeable he is gone. The gents are so strong together, you have to wonder if they can maintain the same success in their solo career - just look at the Spice Girls.
But let's talk songs, first single, "Drag Me Down" was their first Australian number one and it was well deserved. This is a great song with a very catchy chorus and a superb pop/rock beat. It'll go up there as one of the stronger 1D singles. "Perfect" is infact that. Myself and the girls at work are all so in love with this track right now. Clearly aimed at Taylor Swift, it shows a great tongue in cheek quality, and with lines like, "And if you're looking for someone to write your break up songs about, baby I'm perfect:. This is catchy as hell and quite splendid!
The album tracks are also great, with so many highlights. There's quite a beautiful ease to "History", like the best 70s soft rock. "I Want To Write You a Song" is Beatlesque brilliance, a simple track that is all heart. "Love You Goodbye" is all heartbreak and incredibly clever and beautiful. "What a Feeling" has such a perfect ease that it truly is infectious. Another great ballad is "End of the Day", these songs really do seem to be hinting at the end of the 1D journey.
There has not been a bad One Direction album, they have all been incredibly strong. And while I still think, "Midnight Memories" is their best album, that doesn't take anything away from "Made in the A.M". This is a great album from one of the greatest pop acts.
