It's so great to make a list of Top 5 songs every week, it's great to look back at a wonderful artist and choose the five songs of theirs that I love most. This afternoon I spent time listening to Gloria Estefan's back catalogue - that is a good afternoon.
From her days with Miami Sound Machine, to today, Gloria Estefan has released some amazing music. Having sold 100 million albums worldwide, she is a true pop legend.
There were so many songs to pick from, I decided to not include the Miami Sound Machine hits, and just selected solo hits, though it was hard not having "Anything For You" selected. And there were some amazing songs that just missed out. It was hard not picking, "Don't Want To Lose You", likewise for the excellent, "Live For Loving You". Adored her cover of "It's Too Late" and her NSync duet, "Music of My Heart" always gives me the feels.
Time to find out what did make the list. Have a read, share with friends and tell me what your favourite Gloria Estefan songs are in the comments section below.
5 - Coming Out of the Dark
What a beautiful song written after such a horrific event. This beautiful gospel style ballad was the first song released after Gloria nearly died in a tour bus accident. This is a truly inspiring song about hope that is so beautifully sung. The track is produced wonderfully and you can't help but be swept up in the emotions. This song always makes me feel all kinds of emotions!
4 - Get On Your Feet
Gloria became famous for her stunning ballads, but she also knew how to belt out a dancefloor thumper better than most. That beat is so damn infectious and makes you want to move, maybe she was right, sooner or later the rhythm is gonna get you! What a perfect chorus, and the instrumentation is sensational, love those horns and 80s synths. Now I just want to dance!
3 - Cuts Both Ways
Speaking of beautiful ballads, "Cut Both Ways" is one of the best. A sweeping ballad, the music is inspiring but takes a backseat to the amazing vocals and those lovely lyrics. Gloria Estefan has such a wonderfully emotive voice and is a natural storyteller, "Cuts Both Ways" is a perfect example of this. This truly is a gorgeous song.
2 - Reach
In the 90s Diane Warren was the Queen of song writing, and here is another of her classics. Written with Gloria, this track became the theme to the 1996 Atlantla Olympics - I still remember watching Gloria perform this at the Games. The lyrics are inspiring and she sounds brilliant as always. I personally love the Higher Radio Edit, it is the version I play a lot. The same great song but with a great dance beat.
1 - Turn the Beat Around
For me no other tune could be at number one. This song came out when I was first going to clubs and this song always went off when it came on. Taken from Gloria's great covers album, this disco classic is handled so perfectly. The strings, percussion and synths marry so well and the vocals are vibrant and fun. And love the flute part when she mentions the flute player. I still listen to this track a lot, and whenever I play it, people go crazy for this song. It is a true 90s classic!
