I can tell you that when I first started writing this blog, I never thought that Tina Arena's amazing hit, "Chains" would end up a new single of the week, but here it is, featuring Tina with Jessica Mauboy and The Veronicas, and quite simply, it is brilliant!

Before we talk about the wonder of the new version of "Chains", let's take a moment to one, applaud Tina's inclusion into the ARIA Hall of Fame; and two, her kick arse acceptance speech. Tina has never been one to mince words and this occasion was no different. Tina passionately spoke about ageism in the music industry, especially for women. She encouraged radio to, "continue to support Australian music on the quality of the song and not the age of the artist." Tina is clearly upset her brilliant, "I Want To Love You" hasn't gotten the attention it so richly deserves. She went on to say that women over 40 have still great music in them, citing Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez, Annie Lennox and Madonna. Tina has spoken, now I hope you've all bloody listened!!!!
Now to the new version of what we can pretty much call Tina's trademark song - it certainly was her biggest international hit. While musically the new version follows a similar thread, though the guitars seem a little harder, it is the vocals that have been updated. Jess and Lisa from The Veronicas are brilliant vocalists and they prove it again here. And as for Jessica Mauboy, not only is her voice exceptional, you just have to love her. The sheer joy you can see on her face as she sings with Tina is intoxicating. And boy can Tina hold a note, she is a consummate performer and her vocal range is rarely matched. She may just be the best vocalist that Australia has produced.
It is great that "Chains" has been riding high on the iTunes charts, lets hope that equals a Top Ten ARIA Chart spot later this week. Tina, and The Veronicas and Jessica Mauboy deserve it. Not just because they are Australia, or because they are women, or because Tina is over 40. They deserve it because this is a brilliant version of a truly iconic song!
