Go big or go home they say. This week for our Top 5 list we are going very big, one of the biggest and most successful recording artists of all time, the one, the only Ms Mariah Carey.
Ms Mariah Carey has sold over 200 million albums and the Guinness Book of World Records has her listed as the highest selling artist of the 90s, impressive indeed. She has that voice and has always been very fabulous, all through her ups and downs. She is the consummate diva, a true artist and a music icon.
So now somehow I have to whittle all this down to just five songs! This is a woman with 62 official singles over her career. Now I have done it, my list may be controversial, but this is meant to be quite subjective. I've noticed that 4 out of 5 songs were first singles from albums, not surprising, the strongest single is usually released first. Naturally there were a number of great songs that missed out. For early work, I adore, "Love Takes Time", "I Don't Wanna Cry" and "Dreamlover". Also adore "Honey", "Obsessed", and "Triumphant" really should have been a hit. Then she's done some amazing duets, there's her powerhouse ballad with Whitney, "When You Believe" and the massive seller with Boyz II Men, "One Sweet Day". Plus, if there was a number six on the list, it would no doubt go to the brilliant, "We Belong Together". So many amazing tunes,

5 - #Beautiful (featuring Miguel)
Some may not expect newer Mariah to make it to the list, but this great R&B mid tempo ballad holds a special place in my heart. Plus, this was pretty successful, number six here in Australia. Mariah sounds great and Miguel is a genius. This is one sexy song and one I love to play loud and sing along with. Lyrically it's all kinds of fun and is a very infectious song. This song proved that Mariah was still able to release world class tunes all these years after she first set the charts on fire.
4 - Someday
I've always adored Mariah's first albums, the singles were so strong. My favourite though had to be the most pop orientated of all the songs, the awesome, "Someday". The song is so fun and so very 90s, in the best possible way (and let's face it, current pop is completely being inspired by the 90s sound). The dance pop song has a great beat and this was when we were first discovering how big Mariah's voice really was; she proved it her with that amazing note at the end of the tune. Great stuff.
3 - Touch My Body
This may be a controversial entry into the list, though the song did hit number one in the US. What a playful little song this, sexy Mariah is always fun and that hook is great. With a more R&B feel, this may not have been the best showcase for Mariah's vocals, but it showed that she could keep up and better so many of her younger and newer peers. This is the kind of tune that once I hear it, it stays in my head for days. Plus, you have to love that film clip.
2 - Heartbreaker (featuring Jay Z)
Speaking of infectious tunes, this one has long been an earworm favourite. This is Mariah Carey at her best, she gets to show off her voice with those amazing runs, there's some sexy lyrics and the beat is fierce. While the song may be a simple one, it doesn't matter - it's just so bloody good! The Jay-Z verse is great, but for me it's all about that beat and Mariah's voice. And now that I've just played this while writing, it will no doubt be in my head all day!
1 - Fantasy
I play a lot of old school 80s and 90s tracks at work, and whenever this tune comes on, everyone gets a little excited and sings along - and rightfully so, this is a perfect slice of pop. It brilliantly uses a sample and crafts a song that is just so addictive. Laidback, the music is the perfect showcase for Mariah to go full diva and show us that massive vocal range. Mariah has always been so good at crossing genre, pop, dance, R&B, hip-hop and gospel, and she does it all with this track. Excuse me, while I press play and watch that fun clip again.
