Album Review: Let the Road - Rixton

Rixton have been around for a year and have finally released their debut album, after already releasing four singles in the US. The good news is, the album was well worth the wait! "Let the Road" is an accomplished first album with great singles and very strong album tracks.

Hailing from Manchester in the UK, this four piece all man band is a little rock, a little R&B and a lot of pop. Naturally in today's pop music landscape the comparisons to One Direction are inevitable. And, yes, there may be some similarities there, the album sounds most like 1D's "Midnight Memories" - which let's face it, is the best 1D album. There's also some similarities to Westlife, which to me, is always a good thing. You could even compare them to Australia's own, 5 Seconds of Summer - though Rixton is a little more pop. But in all, the boys have forged their own little corner in the crowded boy/man band market.

So let's talk about the album, and there's a lot to enjoy here. First single and UK number 1, "Me and My Broken Heart" is still amazingly catchy, even after a year. With a sample of Rob Thomas's "Lonely No More", this is a little like Maroon 5. A solid first single and great sing along track. Second single "Wait on Me" is also a great little pop ditty. Infectious, with a great a pop sound and hints of reggae. This should have been a bigger hit worldwide.

It's also a crime that third single, "Hotel Ceiling" hasn't hit the charts anywhere in the world. This is a stunning ballad with great vocals, instrumentation and some truly beautiful lyrics. This is a tale of a breakup where the guy is not handling it too well - with the exquisite video clip taking it to a whole new level. Co-written by Ed Sheeran, it's more proof that he is one of the best ballad writers around today. Fourth single, "Make It Out" is pretty damn fun and the video makes it even better. The repeated "make out" chant near the end is especially great.

As for the rest of the album, there's some great stuff here, including my favourite song on the whole album. "We All Want the Same Thing" is an amazing song which showcases lead singer's Jake Roche's beautiful falsetto. There's some great 90's inspired tracks, harmony driven title track, "Let the Road" sounds very much like Boyz II Men, and "I Like Girls", co-written with Mike Posner, is another 90's sounding piece of power pop. "Appreciated" has a great driving beat and "Whole" is another great ballad from the boys.

"Let the Road" is a great debut from a band who shows great potential for the future. These are catchy songs and Roche's voice shines throughout the album. This one will be on heavy rotation for a while - let's hope they achieve the chart success they definitely deserve!
