Single of the Week: Only Human - Delta Goodrem

Delta is back, back with a stunning ballad that is truly reminiscent of the work from her stunning debut album, "Innocent Eyes", showcasing her wondrous vocals, piano playing and songwriting skills.

Delta has been a popular target of the tall poppy syndrome. People loved her, she was a massive star and then suddenly it all changed and it became the done thing to bag out Delta. People could just tell they didn't like her. Really, they were just talking out of her arse. She has been nothing but genuine and the fact her last album wasn't a bigger success, was a major crime. There were some amazing songs on that record, especially "Dancing With a Broken Heart" and "Wish You Were Here". It was like when I was younger and Kylie Minogue became dirty words. At high school I had to go with my brother's friend to her live gig because my friends believed they had to hate Kylie. Kylie rode that wave out and became massive again, let's hope Delta can do the same because she is a true talent.

It seems Delta is aware of the negativity as well. While it could be argued this song is just about a love gone wrong, the lyrics sound more like Delta is sounding off about her detractors. And what stunning lyrics these are, "I've had too many knives thrown at my back. Wouldn't it be easy to throw it all away? Wouldn't it be easy to call it a day?" This is a woman who is aware of her haters and can write about it very eloquently.

You always know with a Delta song you are going to have a beautiful vocal performance, especially on her ballads. There's just something special about Delta playing the piano and singing. Here the solo piano sounds very melancholic, as does Delta's voice. This isn't the kind of track that gets stuck in your head after a couple of listens, it's a grower. But after a few listens you begin to realise how beautiful the track really is.

I for one am very excited about the new Delta album, especially with a stunning first single like "Only Human".
