Album Review: Confident - Demi Lovato

There are so many great artists releasing albums over the next few months that it may be hard to keep up with, but an album I knew I wasn't going to miss was the newie from Demi Lovato, "Confident", and I was not disappointed - this is an exceptional album from a lady with a truly special voice.

As Demi and Selena Gomez have released their albums only a week apart, naturally everyone is trying to compare the pair. Yeah, they are both ex-Disney starlets making pop, but the two are taking very different directions, Lovato going the more personal route. the end result sees both releasing great albums, really great albums.

Demi Lovato is not a scared little teen anymore, she has been through a lot and has come out the other end more determined than ever. This is a passionate album from a woman ready for redemption, a woman who is evolving but still remains hopeful - it really is quite inspiring.

Lovato has an incredible voice, it's seductive, it's powerful, it's passionate, and boy does she know how to hit a high note; but you also have to love it in those vulnerable moments as well. Add that she's co-written almost every song on this album, and we can see just how impressive Lovato really is.

"Cool for the Summer" is still as impressive as it was on its release, in fact it was back on high rotation for me this week. I truly believe this is Demi's best song and will certainly be riding high in my Top Ten tracks for the year. An ode to exploration and self discovery, this fun tune has a great beat, fun lyrics and takes us on such a great pop journey. I truly love this song.

Second single, "Confident", is another great tune, though not as good as "Cool for the Summer". The drums are fantastic on this track, as is the opening. Plus, you have to love those horns. With a catchy chorus, and a great message, this is another solid single.

"Old Ways" shows some more great emotion from Lovato, accompanied by a solid beat, strong but vulnerable vocals and some great lyrics, "Not going back to my old ways". "Stone Cold" is another corker, as we witnessed from Demi's performance on SNL. This track has such power and builds beautifully, I mean, wow, that note near the end! This is a beautiful ballad with some melancholic lyrics, "Maybe if I don't cry, I won't feel anymore".

"Kingdom Come", her track with Iggy Azalea, has future single written all over it. It's another powerful tune with a great chorus and beat. Plus Iggy adds a great little verse to make a very solid track. The other collaboration on the album, "Waitin' For You", with Sirah, is also great. Personal and powerful, the song has a sexy beat with some great attitude.

My other favourite song on this album has to belong to the very raw and emotional, "Father". Wow, this is one powerful song. A devastating confessional about her relationship with her deceased father, the lyrics are so tender and filled with an obviously still hurting heart, "You did your best, or did you?". The track and her voice are beautifully soft to start, before it builds to that equally beautiful and devastating conclusion. This track will be a favourite for many years to come.

Other tracks to look out for are the sexy ballad, "Wildfire", the passionate "Lionheart" and the anthemic "Stars". But really, there are no weak links on this album.

Lovato's last album, "Demi", was a big favourite of mine but she has topped that and made her best album to date. It's easy to compare pop divas, but why do we need to? Demi Lovato is a great artist who has made a great album, end of story.
