Album Review: Revival - Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is an artist I've always enjoyed, but it was always about the singles, I had never tried out one of her albums. So I thought it was time to check out her new album, "Revival", and what a great surprise, this is a brilliant album from an artist who is truly finding her voice.

Selena Gomez, whether it be with her old backing band The Scene, or solo, has always released solid tunes. Songs like, "Love You Like a Love Song", "Come & Get It" and "The Heart Wants What It Wants", have been great, but she hasn't received the attention she probably deserves, especially here in Australia. I guess she was always just judged for her connection to Justin Bieber or as a former teen star, which is a shame. But with the release and success of this years, "Good For You", Ms Gomez is standing up and demanding we pay attention. I was hoping to like the new album, thought it would be solid pop, but I was surprised at how much I really did like this album, it really is quite brilliant.

"Revival" is well produced and quite slick. This isn't a teen artist playing pop star, this is an adult album from an accomplished artist really finding her voice. Layered and rich, it's such an easy album to enjoy. Instantly satisfying songs that will quickly become addictive and infectious. Gomez's voice is growing stronger, and she has an attitude on these songs that you can't help but love.

"Good For You" is a perfect first single, and a well deserved success for Selena. It's a dark and moody torch song with the right amount of sex appeal. With hints of R&B, this is very current pop and shows that Selena is serious about sticking around for a while.

Second single, "Same Old Love", showed a different side of Selena. Co-written by Charli XCX, it feels like an XCX song. While it's a solid tune, I'm a much bigger fan of "Good For You" and think many of the other album tracks would have been a better second single.

Speaking of album tracks, there is a whole lot to be excited about. Title track, "Revival" is brilliant. Love the spoken word intro and the chorus is fantastic. This very current and hopeful track is a perfect showcase for Selena's many talents. Promo single, "Me & the Rhythm" is incredibly catchy and the beat is constant and great. The bridge is also great and this is a wonderfully layered song. "Camouflage" is a great piano ballad with some cool lyrics, "I've got so much shit to say".

"Me & My Girls" would be a perfect single, sounding a little like a Nicki Minaj track, the vocals are great and the beat is awesome - love those 90s sounding horns. And you have to love those lyrics, "I'm going home with who I came with, and who I came with isn't you". "Sober" is a heartbreakingly great tune with a nice mid tempo beat. Then there's "Perfect", which comes pretty close to it. This ballad with a beat is a sad tune about a cheater.

Other winning tracks are "Hands to Myself", "Cologne" and "Rise", which also has a cool spoken word part.

This is a good album, a solid album and proof that Selena Gomez is not an artist that should be overlooked. There are so many good albums out at the moment, and this heads right for the top of the list. Inspiring stuff!
