The Top 5 Australian Girl Groups

Girl groups are great, their music puts a massive smile on your face. Every few years, there seems to be a new group that rule the charts. The world again has some amazing girl groups catching the attention of the pop world. Both Britain's, "Little Mix" and the US's "Fifth Harmony" were both created via the X-Factor and have crossed over to be genuine stars. But where are the Australian girl groups?

"Internal Jukebox" wanted to celebrate the best of Australian girl groups this week, but looking back, there just haven't been that many! In a world where, "Spice Girls", "TLC", "Bananarama" and "Destiny's Child" have reigned supreme, Australia has never fully embraced the girl group. Which is a shame, cause when done right, we have had some awesome girl groups, I love them all on this list - it's just a shame it was hard to get even five names!

Now some would include "The Veronicas" on a list like this, but for me, they don't fall into the girl group demographic. They are a duo, and a great one at that, they just don't fit into this list, so that also knocks out Sister 2 Sister and Jackson Mendoza. Now over the years there were some promising acts that just never took off - maybe Australia really doesn't like homegrown girl groups? I liked groups like Non Blondes, Cherry and Tatu. Then there's Slinkee Minx, who may have had a Top 5 hit with their cover of "Summer Rain", but never followed it up.

So without further adieu, our top 5 Aussie girl groups. Remember to tell us yours in the comments below. Is there a girl group we don't know about that we should be listening to?

5 - GF4

Now this might seem like cheating, but one, they changed their name and got a little harder after the departure of Robyn Loau, and two, there was slim pickings for a number five! But their two singles were brilliant. "Sooner or Later" was a great tune that peaked at number 11 on the Aussie charts. And then there was their most adult sounding tune, "Need Love (To Make the Sex Right)", which is a song I still play a lot. The beat on both songs was 90s perfection, a deeper club orientated sound and their vocals were on point. Check out "Sooner or Later" above, and remember their greatness.

4 - Chantoozies

Chantoozies are an interesting one. Do they classify as a girl group? Originally they featured a 4 piece male band that backed up the four female vocalists, but the gents left and the ladies continued, as three piece - so they get included! Their early stuff, with the lads, like "Witch Queen" and "Wanna Be Up" were top ten smashes and are iconic songs, but their work as a three piece was also great. Their covers of "Love the One You're With", and last years "Baby It's You", are great tunes. The ladies are still touring, and still sound great together.

3 - The Teen Queens

Long before Kelli joined Hi-Five, she was the lead of this great little girl group from the early 90s. On the back of their many appearances on TV show "E-Street", the ladies scored a few big hits with their covers of songs from the 50s and 60s. Their biggest hit was "Be My Baby", which was wonderfully mashed up with "The Best Part of Breaking Up". I always loved their cover of "Can't Help Myself" and any fan of "E-Street" will remember their single, "Love How You Love Me", which was beautifully used for the wedding of Toni and C.J. He was temporarily blinded and got his sight back, just as she walked up the aisle. Teen me loved that show, and loved these ladies!

2 - Young Divas

Fans of Australian Idol know the "Young Divas" only too well. Featuring four of the shows best ladies. Paulini, Ricki-Lee, Emily and even a winner, Kate, the ladies struck it big with their first album which featured the mega-hit, Donna Summer's "This Time I Know It's For Real". Then Ricki-Lee left and Jessica Mauboy joined, but the second album didn't fare as well. But you can't deny the ladies amazing melodies. Each Diva has an amazing powerhouse voice, and the end result was nothing short of spectacular. Also for a big Stock, Aitken & Waterman like myself, knowing they covered so many of their songs was extra sweet. A shame they didn't continue, as the "Young Divas" were fierce!

1 - Girlfriend

There could be no other group at number one besides Girlfriend, incidentally the only act on this list to go number one. Debut single "Take It From Me" was perfect pop, and a rightful number one single. Remember so many at high school going crazy for it, one guy even lying that he was dating one of the girls. Um, yeah, right dickhead! Also loved that their lead singer, the very, very talented Robyn Loau was from the same hometown as me, Blacktown. The rest of their debut album was great as well, "Without You", "Love's on My Mind" and "Bad Attitude" were great singles, and even "Girl's Life" was a guilty pleasure (listening to it right now and loving it). Their second album wasn't as strong, but "Heartbeat", "Wishing on the Same Star" and album track, "I Wanna Be Your Friend", were all great tunes. 90s pop holds a special place in my heart, more innocent, and Girlfriend will always be one of my favourites - they certainly are the best Aussie girl group of all time. Now listen to "Take It From Me" again, it rules!
